Dimmer switch installation depends on two things: the load and the box. A dimmer has to match the bulb, since LED loads need an LED rated dimmer or you get flicker and buzzing at low settings. Dimmer capacity is rated in watts, and total load across the fixtures has to stay under it. Dimmers also give off heat, so ganged dimmers in one box are derated.

Smart switch installation needs a neutral in the box. Older homes with switch loop wiring often have no neutral at the switch, which means pulling a new conductor or picking a no neutral model. We confirm which one applies before ordering anything. Timers, occupancy sensors, and fan controls follow the same rule: the device has to match the load and the wiring that is already there.

THREE WAY AND FOUR WAY SWITCH WIRING

Three way switch installation controls one light from two locations. It uses two travelers between the switches and one common terminal on each, and the common is the terminal that matters, since reversing it is the most frequent reason a working pair of switches stops working.

Four way switch wiring extends that to three or more locations, with a four way device sitting between two three way switches. These are the calls where a homeowner swap went sideways, and tracing the travelers in an older box takes longer than the switch itself. We identify each conductor, confirm the switch leg, and test from every location before closing up.
